Epoxy Floor Coating Chicago Illinois Case Study
Location: Downtown Chicago
Property Type: Office Building
Client Name: Cannon Design Group
Project Size: 20,000 sq. ft.
Time to Complete: 2 Weeks
Contractor: PSI Americas, Glendale Heights
Scope of Project: Client wanted a designer look floor close in resemblance to burnished or hand-troweled concrete. The floor itself was in relatively good condition. Another important consideration for the Cannon Design client: They also wanted to ensure that their premier decorative concrete floors could withstand high-traffic use and still remain beautiful and easy to maintain.
Solution Summary: PSI Americas prepped concrete surface using shot blasting and diamond grinding. The team then installed two (2) coats of Mapei Quick patch using hand troweling. Next, the contractor applied 2 top coats of Neogard clear epoxy.
Concrete Contractor Solution for Cannon Design Group
PSI Americas used decorative self-leveling overlays with the added protection of sealers to help the Canon office floors resist grease, dirt and stains. From a construction standpoint, self-leveling overlays offer even further advantages. These systems help to repair damaged and uneven floor surfaces, and because of the extra surface preparation that goes into these projects, the concrete floor ends up more dense, smooth and durable than before application.
Concrete Preparation & Resurfacing
Concrete resurfacing requires adequate preparation and skill to ensure that the floor surface will permanently bond with whatever decorative coating, cementitious overlayment or sealer used in the final design. PSI Americas used the surface prep technique, shot blasting, since it provided an economical and effective method to prepare and redesign the concrete floors.
Using steel shot, the contracting team blasted concrete surfaces in order to clean and remove any soft concrete (or laitance) and contamination. Shot blasting prepares the surface to improve bonding with any sealants or epoxies that will be applied later in the process.
Next, concrete diamond grinding cleans and abrades concrete surfaces in order to smooth the substrates. Typically, commercial contractors use this method to remove thin coatings or mastics so they may prepare the surfaces for application of sealants.
Products
Hand-troweled Mapei Quickpatch – this high-performing cementitious patching material may be applied to interior or exterior surfaces such as concrete flooring, pads, driveways and sidewalks. While it may be used for new applications, it is also an excellent material for restoration of damaged or weathered concrete. Mapecem Quickpatch is widely used by commercial contractors in order to allow for easy application of self-leveling underlayments.
Neogard Clear Epoxy – floor coating systems by Neogard provide a decorative epoxy coating that cures quickly and allows for faster project turnaround times. The epoxy coating material is designed for heavy traffic while also offering impact, chemical and abrasion resistance.
