Steps to Natural-Looking Decorative Polished Concrete Floors

Custom Concrete Solutions, owned by Don Pinger, completed this project for Van Wilgen’s Garden Center near New Haven, Connecticut.

The result is a durable, natural-looking, earth tone decorative stained floor. The polished cement process creates a seamless surface that is both attractive and easy to maintain.

The first step of the project commenced with the arduous task of removing the old VCT tile. The CCS team used a ride-on scraper to remove the tile. If you’ve never seen this process, watch the short 45-second video showing a ride on scraper in action below.

The next step was grinding and polishing the concrete. This step requires specialized equipment. The polish process requires going back and
forth over the cement surface starting with grinding blades followed by subsequent passes with finer blades.

Before the final shine is achieved, the floor was stained a decorative brown earth tone with Kemiko Cola Stain. This is an acid stain that reacts with the lime in the cement producing a reddish brown color resembling old, worn leather.

Midway through the process, a liquid densifier manufactured by Prosoco is applied to harden the surface and increase the surface area for polishing.

The final steps are polishing to 1,500 grit followed by application of Prosoco Consolideck LS Sealer. The sealer is then burnished.
