What Is Metallic Epoxy Flooring
Metallic Epoxy Coatings are similar to traditional high-performance resinous systems. They are 100% solids with a primer and base coat. The sensational appearance resembling marble with different tones is achieved with a pearlescent metallic pigment. The final protective finish is a clear urethane that withstands foot and vehicle traffic. The finish is non-slip and easy to clean.
How Long Do They Last
The life of a metallic epoxy depends on the use. In a residential space such as a garage or basement, they will last for many years. In a commercial area the life is subject to the use. In most areas they will last for 5-10 years or more depending on maintenance. Urethane finish coats can be cleaned, waxed and buffed prolonging the life and appearance indefinitely.
How Much Do They Cost
Most applications cost in the range of $5.00 – $10.00 per square foot depending on the size and special conditions. For example, a 500 square foot area at $7.00 per square foot will cost $3,500.00.
How To Apply Metallic Epoxy Flooring
Application of metallic epoxy starts with surface preparation. The floor is ground or shot blasted first to open the pores of the concrete while also removing blemishes that could be bond breakers. Then all the cracks are filled. Once the surface prep is completed, the base or prime coat is applied with a squeegee and roller. The second coat and pearlescent pigment is applied. Once this coat dries, the clear urethane protective coat is applied with a roller.
How to Mix Metallic Epoxy
Epoxy is a two coat system combining a resin and hardener. They are poured into a bucket and mixed with a drill and mixing paddle.
How to Clean Metallic Epoxy
In light use areas you can use a microfiber dust mop. For high traffic areas you can use a wax and recoat system. There are wax coats available with 15-25% solids that can be applied with a microfiber mop. Then when dry you can use a high-speed burnisher which melts the wax filling in scratches in the surface.
Where Can You Buy Metallic Epoxy
There are many distributors who offer metallic epoxy floor coatings. However, it is recommended to hire a skilled specialized epoxy contractor.
