Robert Longo created a black waxed sculpture embedded into the concrete floor at the Petzel Gallery on West 18th Street. Rather than try and explain the artwork, view the sculpture here.
So how do we explain the floor? It looks like polished concrete. It’s gray with subtle variations. It’s simple and clean. Despite its appearance, the project is not what many in the business would call concrete polishing.
Paul and his team are a combination of contractors, scientists and artisans rolled into one. Few, if any, have the vision to create an elegant floor that serves to enhance everything else in a room. It does not steal the show by any means. Perfect for an art gallery where the last thing that should be noticed are the floors, walls and ceilings.
In the the photo via link above, you’ll notice lighting is critical. Huneck creates a floor that absorbs light rather than creating reflection. It’s no easy task to create the natural appearance of polished concrete without the shine. Huneck pulls it off.
