Surface Prep for Concrete Floors
The process starts with extensive surface prep. The first step includes grinding the concrete floor to remove high and lows in the surface. The grinding process also removes grease, oil, paint and any contaminants on the concrete surface.
Grinding will open up cracks in the surface. All cracks in the surface are then filled to the full depth of the concrete slab, not just the surface.
Once the prep work is complete, the polyurea contractor applies the Metallic Epoxy or Polyaspartic Coatings.
What Is a Metallic Floor Coating System? Benefits of Epoxy & Polyaspartic Floors
Metallic Coatings are available in an epoxy or polyaspartic system. Each system has its advantages.
- Cure Period: Epoxy has a slower cure cycle than polyurea & polyaspartic systems. Polyurea coatings can be applied in one day and used the next. The cure cycle for epoxy is 5 to 8 days.
- Temperature: Polyurea can be installed from -20 degrees to 130+ degrees. Application of epoxy requires temperatures, including slab temp, to be 50 degrees or higher.
- Hot Tire Resistance: Both systems will withstand hot tires from road friction without damage.
- Odor During Install: Polyurea systems do not have chemical smells during install. Epoxies do.
- Non Slip: Both are non-slip systems and retain traction when wet.
- UV Protected: Polyurea systems are 100% UV protected and will not fade.
- Colors: Both polyaspartic and metallic epoxy flooring systems have numerous color options.
- Bacteria Resistant: Application of both types of floor systems prevent bacteria growth.
